Bishnupur is a small town in the Bankura district of West Bengal, It is famous for weaving rich silk sarees. Silk weaving in Bishnupur dates back to several hundred years & it continues to be an important cottage industry even today. This light-weight, pure silk sarees are named after Bishnupur & hence called as Bishnupuri Silks. These silks have a soft, smooth texture and drape beautifully well. They come in a variety of colours with numerous designs and motifs.
"Batik" is an ancient form of handloom and fabric painting in which the fabric is printed with wax resist, before being dyed. This ancient craft of Batik has been preserved at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, an institution founded by the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Shantiniketan in West Bengal is the art hub for Batik. Traditional Batik motifs represent the beauty of nature such as flowers, leaves, birds, fish, insects and animals. Other more elaborate motifs depict humans, folk scenes and Gods.
